The Dore Programme
Wynford Dore is a multimillionaire businessman. He retired early and since then live a luxurious lifestyle. In fact, a lot of people were envy of him. But even the most successful people do have struggles in life too. Wynford Dore has a severely dyslexic daughter named Susie. When his daughter was in her teen years, she got depressed and had suicidal tendencies. In fact, she tried to take her own life three times in her early twenties. That’s a wakeup call for Wynford.
That experience made him see the world in a different light. That experience was described by Wynford as the darkest and bleakest time of his life. He remembered sitting beside the bed of his daughter in the hospital feeling empty and desperate.
As young as 9 years old, his daughter Susie was diagnosed with dyslexia. As young as she is, she isolated herself and started to experience depression. Wynford has seen his daughter struggle all her life. The suicide attempt of her daughter has led him to the decision to channel his energies to finding an effective cure for dyslexia and other types of learning disability. In an attempt to find a solution to learning disabilities like dyslexia, Wynford Dore believed in the concept used by Harold Levinson, a famous American psychiatrist. Levinson strongly believes that dyslexia is caused by a fault in the cerebellum, a part of the brain that controls the balance and movement of the muscles.
The Dore Programme is all about forming new neural connections in dyslexic patients by stimulating the cerebellum with exercises like threading beads, catching bean bags, and balancing on a wobble board. He opened his very first center in 2000. His concept was accepted by thousands of people. In fact, he has treated about 30,000 patients. Eventually, he expanded his centers in other parts of the world such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, South Africa, United States, New Zealand, and Barbados. In 2006, Wynford Dore published his very first book, Dyslexia: The Miracle Cure.
The Dore Programme had been controversial from the very beginning. The program was questioned by many professionals. As a matter of fact, a number of papers published in the British Dyslexia Association’s journal questioned the effectiveness of the Dore Programme. It was in 2003 when the British Journal Dyslexia published a positive paper about the Dore Programme. However, the positive paper was followed by 10 critical commentaries. They questioned the program. They feel like the approach used in the Dore Program is not effective in the treatment of dyslexia. Five journal’s board of directors resigned in protest at the critical commentaries in 2006.
Even with such controversy, Dore still managed to secure good publicity. He was featured on television shows such as Tonight with Trevor McDonald and Richard and Judy.
However, his television appearances were questioned by the Independent Television Commission. They doubt the effectiveness of the programme. According to the spokesman of Dore, every treatment was sold at a loss.
Many people think that Dore made millions in his business considering that the long-term plan was to get funding from the government. It didn’t happen. On his website, Dore silenced his critics. He said that he had drawn no salary. His company was run by him and his staff with the right motives.
The Dore programme aims to provide help and support to patients and their immediate family. It has helped a lot of patients in improving their learning ability, especially reading, writing, attention, and focus. In fact, it also helps improve sports performance and social skills with the use of targeted physical exercise.
He continues to help people with learning disabilities through his books. By the end of 2017, his second book will be released.
Mr. Dore is currently living a good and peaceful life together with his four children Susie, Rosie, Glyn, and Gareth. He is also a grandfather. He lives in Warwickshire. He has invested in stocks. He also has several properties and luxury goods like private airplanes and yachts.
